History -

27 Ford Street stands on site which, 700 years ago, was occupied by a leper hospital run by monks from Tavistock's monastery.  The main hospital was situated up the hill at Mount Ford, some 200m distant.  27 Ford Street with its fresh water spring, was used as a wash house for the hospital.
With the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1500s, the old building fell into ruin.  Then in the late 1600s, a set of alms houses was built along Ford Street (later rebuilt in the 19th century), a mill was constructed on Spring Hill directly above the existing house, and workers' cottages were creating leading up to it.  These cottages still stand in Ralph's Court, and one of these cottages forms part of the property now for sale.  27 Ford Street was enlarged with a grand three-storey frontage, and according to some records, as the Great Consuls mines expanded and Tavistock became an important centre for the distribution of locally-produced tin, it became an assayer's house.
Many locals still fondly remember the premises because the ground floor was converted into a shop - Mrs.Keitch's - which sold an eclectic range of goods from pipe tobacco to shoe laces, and penny sweets for passing school-children.
